Extracorporeal Radial Shockwave Therapy (ERSWT) is a series of high-energy impulses to the affected soft tissues of the body. It is a non-invasive alternative to:

Surgery | Steroid injection | Oral medication

Shockwave therapy stimulates the body's natural healing process. There is an immediate reduction of pain and an improved ease of movement, with little or no side effects. It may also reduce the need for further surgery. Extensive medical research has proven ERSWT to be effective in the treatment of;

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Tennis elbow
  • Chronic shoulder conditions
  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
  • Patella tendinopahty
  • Muscular aches and pains
  • Delayed unions and non-union fractures
  • Spasticity
  • Lymphedema

A treatment session involves 2000 shocks or impulses being delivered via a specialist handset, lasting approximately 5 minutes. Medical guidelines state that three treatments are necessary at weekly intervals; however additional treatments may be needed if authorized by your doctor. Whilst the treatment itself may produce some discomfort or pain, the settings can be adjusted to the patient's tolerance levels. The shockwaves works by triggering an inflammatory response, which in turn initiates the body's natural healing process. Any discomfort experienced as a result, should subside within 24 hours. During this time, do not use anti-inflammatory medication e.g. ibuprofen or diclofenac. However you can take paracetamol if needed, as long as you are able to take this medicine. If in doubt then check with your Pharmacist. It is recommended that you rest after treatment allowing your body time to work it's inner magic and start the healing process. During this time, you will be prescribed exercises to assist this physiological process.

Although the immediate to short term effects alone are excellent, the long term effects of the shockwave therapy can take up to 4 months. If you still have problems consult your therapist/doctor as additional treatment may be required or an alternative treatment may be necessary.
